We all know what it feels like to be stressed. Stress can be a constant companion in our lives, whether it’s from work, family, or financial problems.
And while occasional stress is normal and even necessary, chronic stress can lead to a host of health problems. One such problem is adrenal fatigue.
Adrenal fatigue can range from mild to severe and can be caused by several factors, such as chronic stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, excessive caffeine intake, or even an infection.
But at its root is malfunctioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis – the endocrine system responsible for regulating our stress response.
Understanding how this system works can help us better understand how it affects adrenal fatigue. Let’s take a closer look at the HPA axis and how it affects adrenal fatigue.
How Our Adrenal Glands Work
The adrenal glands, which sit atop the kidneys, are our body’s main stress response system. They produce various hormones, including cortisol and adrenaline, which help regulate energy levels, blood pressure, metabolism, and our immune system.
Cortisol is the hormone released in response to physical or emotional stress. It works in conjunction with the nervous system to help keep our body in a state of alertness and readiness. An increase in cortisol signals our body to prepare for “fight or flight”, which helps us respond quickly and effectively to potential threats.
The HPA Axis: How It Works
The HPA axis is the endocrine system responsible for regulating our stress response. It works like a feedback loop, with hormones triggering other hormones in a chain reaction. The HPA axis starts with the hypothalamus releasing corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH).
This hormone triggers the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) into the bloodstream. ACTH then signals the adrenal glands to produce cortisol.
When the hypothalamus senses a potential threat, it releases CRH, which triggers ACTH and, in turn, cortisol production. This hormone cascade is designed to help us respond quickly and effectively to stressors.
However, if the stress response is triggered too often, it can lead to an overproduction of cortisol and other hormones. This can hurt our health and well-being, leading to fatigue, headaches, cognitive impairment, and more.
How The HPA Axis Relates To Adrenal Fatigue
When the HPA axis is functioning correctly, it should be able to regulate our stress response appropriately. But when it’s constantly being triggered by chronic stress, it can become overworked and eventually start to malfunction.
This can lead to a condition known as adrenal fatigue, where the adrenal glands can’t produce enough hormones to effectively manage the stress response.
The result is a range of symptoms such as:
-
fatigue
-
difficulty concentrating
-
insomnia
-
sugar cravings
-
depression
-
anxiety
And while these symptoms can be managed with lifestyle changes such as reducing stress levels and improving diet and sleep quality, the underlying HPA axis dysfunction must also be addressed to fully resolve adrenal fatigue.
How Functional Medicine Can Help
Functional medicine is a form of healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease rather than just treating the symptoms.
By understanding how our body systems work together, functional medicine practitioners can identify underlying imbalances in the HPA axis and develop personalized plans to help restore balance and reduce stress levels. This can help address the root cause of adrenal fatigue so that you can get back to feeling your best.
If you think you might be suffering from adrenal fatigue, a functional medicine practitioner can help identify the underlying causes and develop a treatment plan that works for you.
At Internal Healing & Wellness, Dr. Khan works with patients to understand their unique situations and develop personalized plans to help restore balance and reduce stress. Treatments may include lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, nutrition counseling, herbal supplements, and more to help address the root cause of adrenal fatigue.
If you’re looking for a healthcare provider who understands how the HPA axis works and can help you address adrenal fatigue, contact Internal Healing & Wellness today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Khan.
