Natural Adrenal and Thyroid Support
Modern lifestyles have contributed to more frequent adrenal and thyroid function disorders.
Thyroid and Adrenal Health
Many of our patients are told after just one blood test that their thyroid was functioning normally. Unfortunately, a single test does not always provide an accurate result. Several tests create a more accurate result, some you can even do at home.
Thyroid issues and adrenal issues are linked, so treatment should focus on both. The adrenal glands are the master stress glands in the body and rarely rest. Some doctors claim adrenal exhaustion does not occur but we believe it does. The term describes what happens when adrenal glands are no longer able to function properly after being over-stimulated. Luckily, adrenal functions may be improved and along with proper diet and lifestyle can restore your energy. The adrenal glands produce the hormone cortisol. Cortisol levels fluctuate throughout the day similar to fluctuations in stress levels.
We provide adrenal testing with more accuracy, showing your cortisol levels and how they vary during the day. We also review nutrient levels, lifestyle factors, infections, and hormonal imbalances, which could all have an impact on your adrenal functions.
Have You Ever Been Told You Have a ‘Normal’ Thyroid?
Typically, a thyroid function test only measures the level of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), which is produced by the pituitary gland to regulate thyroid activity. The pituitary gland produces the hormone which stimulates the thyroid gland to produce T4, an inactive thyroid hormone. The liver converts this into an active thyroid hormone called T3.
It is common for TSH levels to show up within the referenced range and cause a ‘normal’ test result. There are, however, other factors to consider for a more accurate result as a TSH test alone can overlook subtle thyroid function changes that may not become obvious until disease occurs. That is why we offer comprehensive thyroid tests.
Nutrient imbalances and autoimmune antibodies may also cause subtle thyroid function changes, including low levels of zinc, iodine, or selenium. These levels are not usually checked when the TSH test result is ‘normal.’ Thyroid issues also arise from intense stress, infections, or illness. It is important to detect thyroid conditions early for the best chance of successful recovery.
Are You Often Overwhelmed or Fatigued?
Hormones produced by the adrenal glands assist in coping with stress, but they can become ‘fatigued’ under chronic, long-term stress. This is known as adrenal fatigue, though some consider the term misleading, as while the glands can respond to stress, they are unable to maintain a high level of function for extended periods. Therefore, you may continue functioning during a stressful day but crash afterward. Over time, this can cause your immune system to run down and increase the frequency of illness. Not only could this result in being bedridden, but you may also continue feeling fatigued, no matter how much sleep you get.
When this occurs, it takes more support to regain energy and be sure that no other conditions are present, such as anemia, chronic viral infections, thyroid problems, or others.
How To Tell If I Have Issues With Adrenal Glands
During our initial consultation, we assess adrenal functions. This includes pathology testing and symptom analysis, or more specialized testing of adrenal functions based on your indicators. One of these tests is a 24-hour salivary adrenal function test which may be done at home.
Additionally, we consider nutritional sufficiency as this is important for brain function and energy levels, along with digestive health, nervous system function, stress support, immune function, hormone, and thyroid function.
Symptoms Related to Thyroid and Adrenal Disorders
Thyroid and adrenal glands are part of the endocrine system and play a crucial role in regulating hormone levels and many bodily functions. When these glands do not function properly, it can lead to a wide array of disruptive symptoms, which we often see in our patients from Houston and The Woodlands.
Some of the most common symptoms associated with thyroid and adrenal disorders include:
- Fatigue
- Infertility
- Mood swings
- Depression
- Hormone imbalances
- Heart palpitations
- Headaches
- Loss of skin tone
- Dry skin
- Hair loss
- Frequent Infections
- Stiffness, aching, or tingling
- Weight loss or weight gain
- Digestive disorders
(diarrhea, constipation, bloating)
Addressing The Underlying Cause
Due to the complexity and importance of the thyroid-adrenal axis, symptoms can greatly vary. Treating symptoms without knowing the underlying cause could result in your condition getting worse over time.
During the consultation, we do a full case study on your present health and your history, including testing if needed. We may request additional specialized thyroid and adrenal testing to determine if there are deeper levels of imbalance. We always try to help with natural support through supplements, dietary and herbal methods first.
